This is a 12-month fixed term or secondment role.
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

We are seeking a Senior Adviser or an experienced Adviser to provide high quality advice and sound administration of significant legislation centred around Aotearoa New Zealand's heritage and taonga.

The role specifically performs the administration of Manatū Taonga's responsibilities under the Protected Objects Act 1975 relating to taonga tūturu and their care, custody, and conservation treatment.

In this role you will help lead/or support Manatū Taonga in Māori-Crown relationships in respect of taonga tūturu and other protected New Zealand objects.

Using your sound understanding of relevant legislation and policies you will be confident that the Crown is fully meeting its obligations under the Act with respect to care of and claims for newly found taonga tūturu.

You work in partnership with Māori, and in collaboration with the sector, government, and other external agencies, to enable the priorities and aspirations Māori have for their taonga tūturu, within our mandate.

This is a critical relationship management role which requires significant sensitivity.

You can build and maintain significant relationships with Māori and cultural sector groups (including senior leadership within these entities), and to represent the Ministry in your engagement with them.

This fixed term or secondment position is expected to be approximately 12 months in duration.
Kōrero mōu | About youYou will have experience or a sound understanding of:

  • the culture and heritage sector, including taonga Māori
- of te reo Māori comprehension and are comfortable in te Ao Māori spaces and places
- tikanga Māori, and working in partnership Māori (iwi, hapū, whānau)
- the public sector, particularly working with legislation, and an awareness of the political environment, processes, conventions, and ethical standards

  • Fluency in Te Reo Māori would be a significant advantage.

In addition, a senior adviser will:

  • Be able to build credible, respected relationships with diverse stakeholders, Māori, cultural sector groups, senior leaders and key external stakeholders
  • Be able to write with clarity on complex issues, including writing for Ministers and Cabinet
