The Director, Strategic Communications and Engagement leads a small team of communications specialists and is responsible for strategic communications and engagement expertise and advice to DPMC's senior leadership and our external stakeholders.

The role plays a key role in developing our organisation through effective internal and external communications, leveraging communications resource and expertise in the department to collectively support DPMC's strategic intentions and to maintain our brand and reputation.

The Director, Strategic Communications and Engagement provides communications advice and support during significant emergency responses.

The Strategy, Governance and Engagement Group (SGE) is a business unit of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC).

The Group supports DPMC to achieve its strategic priorities and manage risk by working across the department, ensuring it has sound strategy, communications, effective governance, effective corporate services, and efficient organisational systems and processes.

With a wealth of knowledge and skill in the field of communications, you'll be ready for your next challenge and the opportunity to influence, lead and collaborate at a senior level.

Naturally you'll be well practiced at providing communications counsel at senior levels, thrive in complex environments and will be highly proficient in modern communication tools and techniques.


  • Significant experience in people leadership, managing an effective team with a positive team culture
  • Senior level experience working at the political interface, with ministerial offices and Ministers
  • Experience in crisis and emergency situations and responses
  • Experience with internal communications as part of organisation development
  • Highest standards of discretion, judgement and integrity, selfresponsibility and focus on quality
  • Good working knowledge of the machinery of government
  • Ability to influence and work with senior colleagues across the public sector
  • Ability to assimilate new and complex information and provide advice accordingly
  • Ability to be innovative and creative in working through issues and problems as they arise.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of, and commitment to, the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and able to sustain an environment that promotes diversity and inclusion
