He angitūtanga | About the role

Do you want to play a key role in helping the Department of Conservation protect Aotearoa New Zealand's special conservation lands, waters and wildlife.

Are you a great people person who has experience in designing effective programmes to engage iwi, stakeholders and communities in government policy decisions and programmes to achieve conservation outcomes across New Zealand.

We are seeking a skilled senior advisor to join the Engagement Team in the Strategic Communications and Engagement Directorate, Public Affairs.

The role is perfect for a person who is passionate about conservation, has experience in the design and oversight of stakeholder and community engagement programmes and projects, is a good strategic and systems thinker, and is great at relationships and working collaboratively with others.

You'll be an excellent communicator and can inspire and support others to think and act in new ways.

You'll be skilled at bringing diverse people together to identify opportunities and innovative ways to address conservation challenges in New Zealand.

You'll be joining a dynamic national team that provides strategic direction, tools, best practice guidance and quality assurance for DOC's engagement work.

This includes stakeholder engagement and relationship management, engagement capability support for programmes and projects, and outreach and education to engage New Zealanders with nature and conservation.

Your work will be varied and tailored as much as possible to your particular skills, strengths, and interests.

He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for

Reporting to the Engagement Manager and working closely with the Principal Advisor, you will be visible, open, engaging, proactive, and agile.

You'll be a great team player, good at communicating and building relationships. You'll have experience in planning, measuring and providing quality assurance for work programmes.

You'll know how to go about identifying organisational and user needs, and developing guidance and tools that support others to do high quality engagement work.

To be successful in the role you will demonstrate the following capabilities:

  • Demonstrated capabilities in strategic thinking and business analysis
  • Ability to translate strategy into plans that result in effective measurable action
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and experience within government and the public sector
  • Experience in providing strategic support and advice to senior leadership teams as well as programme and project teams delivering work across New Zealand
  • A reputation as a capable, cando, well organised and trusted professional who builds strong working relationships with others
  • Demonstrated understanding of Māori Tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Experience in engaging with iwi and Maori will be an additional advantage
  • Committed to the kaupapa of Te Papa Atawhai and its mahi conserving and managing New Zealand's natural, historic, and cultural heritage
This is a permanent role. Ideally, you will be based in Wellington and working from Conservation House. However, working from other regional locations will be considered if you have the skills and experience we're looking for.


Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory - this includes holding a valid work visa that covers the whole period of employment.
