Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People has a unique mandate of having responsibility to steward change across Government, while commissioning disability support services, as well as transforming how these services are delivered.

Disabled people expected to have greater choice and control over the supports and services they receive to lead their best life. We are committed to this by strengthening relationships and working in partnership with disabled people, tāngata whaikaha Māori, Pacific disabled people and their whānau.

Whaikaha presents an exciting opportunity to make a real difference. The call for "Nothing about us, without us" is an integral part of our operation.

As the Principal Advisor you will report directly to the Group Manager, Partnerships and Stewardship and work closely with the Manager New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), to deliver results for Deaf and disabled people, including influencing other government agencies' programmes of work and service delivery.

You will lead and support others to develop strategic work, such as the New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Strategy and will lead the development of action-focused work programme to support this strategy. You will support the development of policy advice in relation to NZSL and Deaf people, such as options to develop the quality and quantity of the NZSL workforce.

You will also draw linkages across and participate as necessary in other key priority work of the Group, such the development of the next New Zealand Disability Strategy.

You will play a lead role in maintaining and developing the quality of advice given to the Minister for Disability Issues.

You will support the Group Manager and team managers in the group to plan and deliver the Group's work programme and share your skills and experience in a way that adds value to the Group as a whole. The role will also provide for some work with the Whaikaha Policy team.

Ko wai koe | About You:

You will have a successful background providing technical leadership and senior expertise across government and will have an interest in Deaf and disability policy and Deaf and disability strategy work.

Your strong relationship management skills will ensure you are comfortable working collaboratively with government agencies and stakeholders and engaging with others.

You will have deep knowledge of the policy process and government financial management practices. This will be paired with knowledge of New Zealand government structures and process such as, committee structures and decision-making processes.

Your proven experience and knowledge of identifying linkages and opportunities across government programmes and initiatives, will be vital to leverage opportunities to deliver results for Deaf and disabled people.

Joining Whaikaha means being part of a whānau that celebrates the diversity that each individual brings. Currently, just over 40% of our people identify as disabled people and we want this number to grow. We care about the wellbeing and success of our people and provide a supportive and inclusive working environment where people can thrive and be who they really are. We are committed to the application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all levels of our work.

We encourage you to talk to us about any support you need. We want you to present this information in a way that plays to your strengths.
