  • About the Role:

As Deputy Secretary, Labour Science and Enterprise (LSE) you will be responsible for managing a dynamic, highly capable team taking a system wide strategic lens to key policy functions which have genuine impact on New Zealanders.

These include New Zealand's skill system, immigration, science and innovation systems, tourism including major events, economic development, employment, health and safety, labour market policy and crown entity performance and investment.

We are looking for an authentic and credible leader who has had proven success leading in the policy sector and a track record of delivering through collaboration with other Government departments and stakeholders.

You will be expected to lead, motivate and inspire highly capable teams by taking a 'just transition' approach so that opportunities and impacts are co-produced, anticipated and supported by taking people on the journey.

This is a collaborative role for an experienced senior leader with proven success leading large, policy functions within the public sector.

You'll have a reputation for driving innovative strategies, frameworks and work programmes which help to develop people, shape systems and processes, and meet the changing needs of customers and government.

The Deputy Secretary LSE is a critical role with Ministerial facing accountabilities.

You will be a key member of and contributor to the Senior Leadership Team, working collaboratively to ensure MBIE is delivering on its purpose - to 'Grow Aotearoa New Zealand for All' and delivering the MBIE organisation strategy Te Ara Amiorangi.

To be successful in this role you will bring:

  • Significant experience at a senior executive level in the State Sector with extensive experience in policy leadership
  • A reputation for leading complex, diverse functions and delivering results;
  • Proven strategic leadership experience at a senior level in a large and complex organisation;
  • Demonstrated ability to take a broad perspective and consider the implications of situations in terms of the wider context beyond MBIE; and
  • Demonstrated political acumen and ability to work with Ministers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principals of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
