Two Deputy Commissioner Roles - Customer and Compliance Services


Inland Revenue - Te Tari Taake (IR) makes an important contribution to the economic and social wellbeing of New Zealanders.

As the principal steward of the tax system, IR plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing its integrity by making the system clear, consistent and simple.

IR interacts with individual and business tax customers, while providing tax policy advice to Government and administering a range of social policy programmes.

With circa 4,000 staff, IR interacts with more New Zealanders than any other agency.

IR has recently concluded a multi-year programme to transform and modernise our tax and social policy system. This aligns with the organisation's ongoing commitment to being customer-centric, intelligence-led and agile.

M ajor opportunities now exist to derive further improvements for customers and deliver efficiency gains from the technological advancements that have occurred.


Reporting to the Commissioner, two new Deputy Commissioners are now being sought to lead the Customer and Compliance Services function _(Ratonga Kiritaki me te Tautukunga), _which plays a primary role in delivering gains during IR's post-transformation phase.

Two-thirds of IR staff sit within this function's two Groups - Individuals _(Takitahi) _and Business _(Pakihi) _- which deliver the majority of the organisation's external customer-facing activity.

These large scale operational leadership roles lead their Groups through highly capable third tier leaders.

Strategic agility will be critical, as will capacity to work 'hand in glove' with your Customer and Compliance Services counterpart, and with other executive colleagues across organisational strategy, culture, and performance.


Deputy Commissioner, Customer and Compliance Services - Individual:

Leading over 2,000 staff, this role is accountable for the delivery of targeted and efficient services to individuals and micro businesses.


The ideal appointee will be a senior organisational leader with a strong background in leading people and delivering high quality services.

You will be able to point to previous experience creating and driving value across organisational 'ecosystems', within large complex environments.

Exposure within large volume, high-transactions business such as financial services, retail, or large scale social services could be valuable.

Deputy Commissioner, Customer and Compliance Services - Business:

Leading over 1,000 staff, this role is accountable for service delivery to medium, large and multi-national organisations, and customers with complex tax affairs.


The ideal appointee will be a senior executive with a strong track record shaping and directing customer strategies in a business-to-business environment.

You will have experience building highly successful teams and managing complex customer relationships.

Previous tax related experience or regulatory knowledge could be beneficial but is not a requirement.

Both Deputy Commissioners have responsibility for delivering end-to-end experiences for customers, driving business outcomes, and improving long-term compliance. As members of the Executive team, both positions provide enterprise-wide leadership and work collaboratively with IR and sector colleagues. These roles will appeal to exceptional leaders seeking to make a difference in a high-performing, complex service organisation. Location is flexible, although frequent travel to Wellington will be required.
