At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

Permanent or secondment opportunity.

This position has a NZC Primary focus.


This is an exciting opportunity to join our Curriculum Lead Service and make a real difference to the wellbeing of children and young people.

This role can be based within any Ministry of Education regional office team.


This is an opportunity to work closely with teachers and kaiako to assist with the design of engaging and responsive curriculum learning that ensures national learning priorities are experienced by every ākonga or learner.

As a senior member of the team, you will coach and mentor colleagues to support service delivery and ensure consistency, particularly within your curriculum area of expertise.

You will also be part of a regional team within Te Mahau, and working closely with your sector to support:

  • Taking practical action to give effect to te Tiriti o Waitangi by building partnerships and connections across takiwā and regions, supporting Curriculum Leads to practically support the design and development of engaging and responsive local curriculum learning that embraces and reflects the diverse cultures, identities, languages of ākonga, learners and their whānau through the national learning priorities, and their contribution to fostering wellbeing.
  • Giving priority to regional and local voice by participating in collaborative networks across takiwā and regions, actively sharing examples of good, local practice. You will be regionally based, working across takiwā, introducing curriculum initiatives to your sector group, and enable Curriculum Leads to support places of learning to work with whānau, hapū and iwi to implement these.
  • Delivering greater responsiveness, accessibility and integrated services and support by consolidating frontline, regional, and national networks to strengthen the design and implementation of curriculum resources, supports and services. This is underpinned by an indepth understanding of the National Curriculum and the connection between wellbeing, te reo matatini me te pāngarau, literacy & communication, and maths learning outcomes.
  • Improving feedback loops and information flows by participating in developing and embedding feedback loops with and across the sectors, regional teams, takiwā and the national team. This contributes to the design and implementation of curriculum resources, supports and services to ensure they are Te Tiriti honouring, inclusive, clear, and easy to use. This strengthens connection across the work in Te Mahau and provides a coherent picture for all sectors.
As part of this role, you will be required to travel domestically with the possibility of overnight stays.

Mōhou ake | About you

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Proven credibility with the education sector and confidence in implementing literacy & communication or maths teaching (early learning, primary or secondary) or te reo matatini or pāngarau teaching (kaupapa Māori or Māori medium) is essential for this role.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in New Zealand Curriculum teaching and learning, assessment theory and practice, with an ability to lead and support professional change in education settings.
