At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
This is a Full-Time Fixed Term until 28 March 2025.


The Lead Secondary Advisor Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and Te Reo Māori provides a te ao Māori lens on concurrent programmes.

They lead design and development of curriculum, teaching, and learning initiatives for senior secondary education to support a smooth transition to further education and the world of work.


The Lead Secondary Advisor works collaboratively with other Lead Secondary Advisors and education agencies to enable equitable student achievement is maintained by providing thought leadership and guidance in English and Māori medium education.

They ensure best practice pedagogy is used to inform initiative design, development, and delivery.


The Lead Secondary Advisor, Te Marautanga o Aotearoa & Te Reo Māori provides a te ao Māori lens on concurrent programmes.

They lead design and development of curriculum, teaching, and learning initiatives for senior secondary education to support a smooth transition to further education and the world of work.

Mōhou ake | About you


You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of te ao Māori and promote tikanga and te reo Māori.

You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) as it applies in the public sector.


You will also have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or other relevant discipline is desirable (postgraduate preferred)
  • A level of fluency in te reo Māori
  • Experience working within project environments
  • A track record of bringing people together and leading, coaching and mentoring others to achieve outcomes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Passionate, independent and motivated.
  • Understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and their implications on operational policy within the education sector, the significance of identity, language and culture and the machinery of government.
  • Te reo Māori exposure or a level of fluency to communicate effectively when required at a level appropriate to the audience.
  • Have curriculum knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and Te Reo Māori New Zealand Curriculum.
