The Ministry of Foreign Affair and Trade is looking a Data Developers to join our Data and Analytics Services team.

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Data Developer role sits within the Ministry's Knowledge, Information and Analytics team.

The purpose of the role is to support Ministry staff and other stakeholders to use data for insights and decision-making, and have information at their fingertips through leading the creation and curation of an authoritative, single source of truth, that's able to amalgamate data holdings across the Ministry and external sources (the MFAT "datahub").

You will join a boutique tight-knit, highly skilled team with great opportunities to be involved in interesting work.

Our work is valued as it supports key Ministry policy development and service delivery.

In a Data Developer role you will:

  • Develop, improve and maintain a highquality and fitforpurpose data warehouse
  • Create and package code and reports to transform and integrate data for the data warehouse
  • Provide technical thought leadership, coaching and support (including supporting data analysts to write SQL code and specifications)
  • Develop knowledge of the key datasets which can support the Ministry's work

The full salary range for this role from 3 April 2024 is $104,670 and $141,612 total remuneration, inclusive of our 3% KiwiSaver employer contribution.

We expect to appoint around the midpoint $123,14- give or take depending on your level of experience.

We'd like to hear from you if you have the following skills and experience:

  • You love data, the more complex the better
  • understanding it, organising it, and managing it
  • You are at your happiest when you can see that you have made a difference to how an organisation cares for and leverages its data
  • You will have extensive experience with a range of data ingesting, and manipulation tools, and a relevant tertiary qualification
  • You have advanced SQL skills and be an experienced user of the Microsoft suite of analytic products (e.g. SSMS and SSIS). Power BI skills would be an advantage


Ideally you will also have a good understanding of tikanga (Māori customs and protocols), with the ability to weave te ao Māori (the Māori worldview) into your work.


If you are just starting on this journey that's OK too - as long as you have a willingness to learn and a desire to develop your cultural capability.
