Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand Springload Full time

We're still looking for a systematic and pragmatic DevOps Engineer (Intermediate to Senior Level) to join the Springload whānau as a permanent team member.

Who we are
The Springload Te Pipītanga whānau is a purpose driven, bi-culturally led digital agency in Wellington. We encourage our employees to thrive at work and at home. We've got great clients, challenging projects, and a friendly workspace. There are always plenty of healthy snacks available, fair trade coffee brewing, and craft beer in the fridge.

What we do and why we do it
Our purpose is to make the things that matter, better — better for people and for the planet. We follow a human-centred process, keeping the people we're designing for at the centre of the work.

We're a multidisciplinary team, and we collaborate closely with each other and with our clients on projects that make a real impact.

We celebrate different perspectives. We're committed to creating an equal, inclusive, and diverse workplace. We know we do better work if we have a diverse mix of people on our team. We're also a certified B Corporation — ethical and environmentally sustainable practices are a huge focus for us.

We're looking for someone who shares the same values.

We can offer you:

- a whānau-friendly, flexible workplace, with flexible working options.
- a learning and growth budget to support your professional aspirations
- a wellness package to keep you physically and mentally fit, including Southern Cross health insurance
- highly talented teammates who strive to create world-class experiences that make people's lives better
- opportunities to get involved in internal initiatives you care about, such as our sustainability group, rainbow network and mental health chats
- a base in central Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, near cafes, shops, theatres, and the waterfront.

About this role
Springload have a small, high functioning cloud first DevOps team.

As a digital agency we have a focus on efficiency and automation, with opportunities to work on a wide range of projects and platforms.

The role is essentially a mix of Cloud Engineering, SRE and Devops practices.

You will get to use industry leading tools and technologies, working with a variety of high performance teams to deliver robust, highly automated solutions.

Check out our github account for some of our tooling:

How we work
We use some great technologies to help us deliver efficiently and systematically, for example:

  • We make extensive use of Docker containerisation
  • We use IAC extensively (Terraform and Pulumi) and avoid any manual configuration
  • All of our development environments are containerised
  • We run production workloads on ECS, Azure k8s and other container runtimes
  • CI/CD we use Github Actions primarily
  • We favour managed services and reducing the surface area of services we have to manage

As a DevOps Engineer you'll:
- work with teams, architects and developers to design and build scalable, secure and redundant infrastructure solutions on public cloud platforms.
- design, build and maintain highly automated CI/CD pipelines and cost efficient, secure and performant hosting environments using Infrastructure as Code
- collaborate with cross-functional teams to build Developer Experience focussed solutions that enable developers and deliver cost effective solutions for our clients
- continuously discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies to maximise development efficiency
- have a keen attitude towards learning new technologies and frameworks.

Required skills and experience

Essential Technology Skills:

  • Public Cloud (Primarily AWS), especially IAM Roles and Security groups
  • IAC: We use Terraform and Pulumi either of these or a similar tech should be fine
  • Networking
  • Shell Scripting
  • Linux, we generally use Alpine or Debian derivatives
  • GIT and other VCS software
  • Docker
  • Web Servers, primarily NGINX
  • HTTP protocol especially headers

Useful technology skills:

  • Development experience, ideally with node, TS, Python or Ruby
  • Golang
  • Nginx
  • IAC: Terraform, Pulumi
  • SQL and database technologies: Postgres, MySQL
  • Debugging, logging and monitoring skills

Other experience we'd love:

  • Great teamworking skills
  • Estimation
  • Great communication skills: the ability to articulate your ideas and plans well, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences.
  • A systematic approach to problem solving
  • A high degree of empathy
