Company description
Opo Bio is a fast-growing New Zealand biotech start-up developing the cell technologies that will power the next generation of biomanufactured ingredients. From our HQ in Newmarket, Auckland, we're building the cell lines and bioprocesses that enable scalable production of high-value animal components such as collagen, fats, and cultivated meat. We work with a global network of partners who share our mission to build the next generation of products from the cell up.
The role
Opo Bio is looking for an experienced and ambitious R&D Scientist to join our close-knit, high-performing science team. In this hands-on role you'll lead experimental design and execution to develop and engineer mammalian cell lines for suspension growth and bioproduction. You'll have the opportunity to drive projects from concept to proof-of-performance, applying your expertise in molecular biology, cell line development, and bioprocess optimisation.
You'll also mentor junior scientists, contribute to strategic R&D planning, and bring a commercial mindset to help translate research into scalable technology platforms.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and execute molecular and cellular engineering strategies for stable cell line development
- Develop and optimise suspension cell culture systems and screening assays
- Lead clonal screening, productivity, and phenotype characterisation studies
- Document and report findings within a quality management framework
- Support technology transfer, partnerships, and scale-up activities
Required skills and experience:
- MSc or PhD in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or Biomedical Engineering (or related field)
- Minimum 2 years' hands-on industry experience in mammalian cell culture
- Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology and mammalian cell line development workflows
- Experience with gene editing systems in mammalian cells
- Demonstrated team leadership or mentoring experience
- Knowledge of suspension culture and bioreactor workflows
- Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS, GLP, or ISO)
Bonus skills:
- Exposure to bioprocess scale-up or technology transfer
- Understanding of commercial R&D, IP generation, and productisation
Why join us?
At Opo Bio, you'll be a core team member shaping the technology and culture of a pioneering startup.
We offer:
- Employee share options (ESOP) – we want you to share in the company's success
- A collaborative, science-driven culture with big growth potential
- Opportunities for leadership, innovation, and international impact
