New Zealand Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Full time NZ$120,000 - NZ$180,000 per year
  • Work from your local Health NZ office – stay connected to your community while delivering nationwide digital health change
  • Be a part of our Digital Services team – shaping the future of digital healthcare for all New Zealanders
  • Permanent, full time role.

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders.

We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations - from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.

Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.

About the Role

We are looking for a Principal Advisor (Infrastructure) to provide thought leadership and strategic direction in shaping the future of Health NZ's digital infrastructure. In this senior advisory role, you will guide the design of secure, scalable, and cost-effective blueprints and roadmaps that support both today's needs and tomorrow's growth. Working alongside specialists, senior leaders, and external partners, you'll influence strategy and ensure infrastructure investments deliver real impact.

As a trusted advisor, you will champion best practices in infrastructure design and planning—connecting big-picture thinking with practical delivery. Your expertise will help us build digital foundations that drive innovation, resilience, and value across the organisation, ensuring our systems remain strong, reliable, and future-ready.

In addition, we are also looking for people to join our Digital Services on-call pool. This involves being part of a roster that provides after-hours support as required.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Our Digital Operations team sits at the heart of Health NZ's digital world — powering the systems that keep hospitals and health services across the country running smoothly. We're the team behind the technology that clinicians rely on every day, ensuring critical systems stay connected, secure, and reliable. But our impact goes far beyond the hospital walls — we're building the digital foundations that strengthen healthcare for communities across Aotearoa. By driving innovation, setting national standards, and investing in smarter, more resilient infrastructure, we're shaping the future of digital health in New Zealand — and you could be part of it.

About you

You will bring deep technical expertise, strong leadership skills, and the ability to influence decisions at a strategic level. With experience spanning large-scale infrastructure projects and advanced cloud, network, and data centre technologies, you're confident in setting standards and embedding best practice in security and risk management.

You will bring;

  • 10+ years' experience in infrastructure design and architecture within large, complex organisations.
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing cloud based infrastructure and platforms (within Amazon, Microsoft, or similar)
  • Proven expertise in networks, servers, storage, and data centre operations.
  • Demonstrable success in developing standards, policies, and roadmaps for resilient and secure infrastructure.
  • Knowledge and experience of Architecture frameworks such as TOGAF
  • Relevant qualifications in IT or Computer Science; professional certifications (AWS, Azure, Cisco) highly valued.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse groups and levels of the business.
  • A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and to contributing to a safe, inclusive, and high-performing workplace.
