Rush Cottage Limited t/a Black Barn Bistro sits on the sunny North facing slopes of the Te Mata hills just outside Havelock North in Hawke's Bay. We've at last re-opened our doors after a devastating fire early last year. But we haven't just replaced what was there – we've changed everything. As a result we're determined to be like no other dining experience in Hawke's Bay. And that includes how we treat our guests. A brand new kitchen with a stonking new wood-fired grill sets the tone for the menu – which is all hand-made on the premises and sourced locally wherever possible. The contemporary new interiors are cool, fresh and welcoming. And our people are the same. We don't mind if guests want to drop in for a seat at the bar for a late afternoon catchup with bites and bubbles or linger all day or evening over one of the most exciting menus in the country. Who is Black Barn?
Black Barn Vineyards is a small New Zealand family owned winery Estate. It was established in 2003 and from the outset always had a focus on attracting visitors to its door rather than simply wholesaling or exporting wine. As part of this plan Black Barn now has 17 luxury retreats under its management, a 2,000-seat amphitheatre in the heart of the vineyard, a summer growers' market, a vibrant kitchen store, a busy cellar door – and of course the Bistro. Black Barn Bistro is a critical anchor to the whole Black Barn philosophy. It's where guests can experience Hawke's Bay at its best, where they get the chance to hear our stories, sample our wines and select from one of the most exciting menus in the country. As a result of all this, Black Barn isn't known just as a winery or a restaurant or a place to stay – it's known as a place to go and have a memorable experience and thanks to our team - a really good time.
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Chef de Partie to join our team at one of New Zealand's most iconic restaurant wineries.
You will be cooking on the larder section and learning to cook on the hot sections.
At Black Barn Bistro we cook classic food with a modern approach using many different techniques. We have a strong focus on organic produce and have several of our own gardeners and farmers supplying the restaurant weekly.
We ferment, pickle, preserve and make our own vinegars for the restaurant and pride ourselves in the fact everything is made by hand in house.
This role is a permanent full time role for a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours per week, Monday - Sunday between the hours of 10am- 11pm. Please note occasional work on public holidays will be required.
Responsibilities
- All dishes are prepared to the Bistro's standard including ensuring consistency in quality and presentation
- Junior staff are mentored/instructed in garnishing, serving and the presentation of food
- Foodstuffs are used correctly and wastage is kept to a minimum
- Food safety standards and practices are consistently maintained across kitchen activities
- supplies, equipment and work areas are routinely inspected to ensure health and safety as well as food safety standards are met

What we are looking for
- A minimum of 2 years experience as a Chef
- At least one of the years' experience in a fine dining restaurant
- Physically fit and able
- A friendly and positive can do attitude
- Eagerness to learn and be the best you can be
- Willingness to help out on any section
- Clean and tidy in all areas including self presentation
- Ability to work alone on your section
- Always on time and ready before the start of your shift
- Able to start as soon as possible
You must have New Zealand Citizenship or a New Zealand Residence visa to be considered for this role.
