The Story

This company is rapidly expanding its teams across analytics, data engineering, and business intelligence. With a new group-wide data management framework being implemented, they need a dedicated leader in New Zealand to own its adoption and success. This role is pivotal in managing the business-as-usual (BAU) governance functions, ensuring data is safe, trusted, and compliant. You'll be joining a team actively investing in advanced analytics and new tooling, including upcoming AI initiatives.

Your Role

This is a hybrid role, split roughly 50/50 between hands-on strategic work and people leadership. You will:

  • Lead and mentor a specialist team of two Senior Data Excellence Analysts.
  • Oversee the management of PII data, including its classification and access rights.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for data quality, working closely with data engineering teams.
  • Drive the successful implementation and adoption of data governance tools and capabilities across the business.
  • Establish and manage frameworks for key data documentation, including the business glossary, data lineage, and ownership.
  • Represent NZ data governance in group-wide forums and collaborate with privacy, risk, and technology stakeholders.

Your Fit

To be successful in this role, you'll bring:

  • Extensive, dedicated data governance experience.
  • A proficient, practical understanding of data governance methodologies and frameworks.
  • Proven experience leading, coaching, or mentoring a team would be beneficial but they are willing to develop this skill for the successful candidate.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with large, complex datasets.
  • Hands-on experience with data management tools (like Collibra or Ataccama) is beneficial.
