The System Leadership group is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Oranga Tamariki Strategic direction.

The purpose of the Redress Team is to lead our redress service to assess and respond to claims relating to children and young people who have experienced abuse whilst in the care of Oranga Tamariki.

The redress service offers a range of responses which takes account of holistic needs and actively promotes the rights of survivors and claimants. A significant part of the work of the team is to further strengthen and develop the claims service, incorporating learnings from the Royal Commission, and to contribute to the design and development of the improved redress system.

The purpose of the Senior Advisor position is to:

Assess, and respond to claims related to children and young people who have experienced abuse whilst in the care of Oranga Tamariki. This role is central to ensuring a kind and caring response which supports a journey of healing in addressing the impacts of abuse.

A key responsibility is to ensure the support is child-centric. This involves promoting the wellbeing of children and to reflect their views in all claims and redress activities. The role requires a considered and calm approach during conversations about difficult experiences. The role will include providing expert knowledge and guidance to inform assessments. It also requires strong advocacy on behalf of individuals in promoting their needs to enable the delivery of a suite of responses.

This role is based in our Wellington office. Due to the operational requirements and dynamic nature of the role, it will be beneficial for you to have the close support of the team and leadership around you. Candidates for this role are required to already be based in Wellington or be willing to relocate for this opportunity.

Key requirements of the role include:

  • Provide an effective, timely and nationally consistent response for claimants.
  • Ensure tamariki and rangatahi remain at the centre of decision making in the claims and redress response.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across Oranga Tamariki and other departments and agencies as appropriate.
  • Build relationships with community and agency providers to ensure wider service provision is maximised.
  • Work with management to identify themes from claims information to inform feedback loops and improve services.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural practices in particular; knowledge of tikanga Māori, and Pacific peoples' culture
