New Plymouth Central, New Zealand Equinox Automation Limited Full time

Are you looking for a role where your work truly makes an impact, where your technical judgement is trusted and your results are recognised?

At Equinox Automation, we value capability, autonomy, and quality engineering. We deliver fit-for-purpose solutions in functional safety, fire & gas mapping, and machine safety, as well as broader instrumentation, control, and electrical engineering across New Zealand and Australia.

Our clients include major operators in geothermal, hydrogen, pulp & paper, water, and oil & gas industries. We're a values-driven consultancy committed to integrity, professionalism, and practical engineering — and we're looking for a senior engineer to help lead project delivery as we grow.

The Role:

You'll lead and deliver both Functional Safety and I,C&E projects from concept through to commissioning — supported by a close team of engineers and a technical lead.

This includes design, integration, and site execution across safety systems and wider control and electrical scopes.

You'll work directly with clients, lead technical delivery, and help maintain Equinox's high standards while growing your own expertise in Fire & Gas Mapping and Machine Safety.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead Functional Safety and I,C&E project delivery from planning through to commissioning.
  • Oversee and mentor engineers, reviewing work to maintain quality standards.
  • Deliver and integrate safety and control systems (SIS, FGS, PLC, DCS, SCADA).
  • Facilitate LOPA/SIL workshops and manage the IEC 61511 lifecycle.
  • Develop and review SRSs, SIF designs, SIL verifications, proof tests, audits and assessments.
  • Lead I&C and electrical design for brownfield and greenfield projects.
  • Support Fire & Gas Mapping and Machine Safety studies (training provided).
  • Build client relationships, lead workshops, and contribute to proposals.
  • Prepare clear, high-quality reports and documentation.

We are seeking people with the following expertise and attitudes:

  • 8–10 years' experience in Instrumentation & Control or Electrical Engineering within process or energy industries.
  • Proven ability to lead projects and take ownership of technical outcomes.
  • Functional Safety expertise: IEC FS Eng certification preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of control systems, field instrumentation, and process control.
  • Understanding of electrical systems — MCCs, VSDs, UPSs, hazardous areas, AS/NZS 3000.
  • A proactive, self-driven mindset — takes initiative, solves problems, supports the team.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Instrumentation & Control, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering.

Why Join Us?

  • Senior position where your leadership and delivery make a visible impact.
  • Diverse work across Functional Safety and general I,C&E engineering — no two projects are the same.
  • Ongoing development in Fire & Gas Mapping and Machine Safety.
  • Pathway to Lead and Principal Engineer roles as we scale for the right people.
  • Competitive, individually tailored remuneration package.
  • Modern New Plymouth CBD office with onsite café and flexible working options.
  • A collaborative, pragmatic culture focused on practical engineering and professional growth.

Applications should be submitted directly through Seek, including your resume, a cover letter, and a short summary of why you are the best person for this role.

Only candidates eligible to work in New Zealand will be considered.
