Senior Water Technician – Auckland

Lead with purpose. Empower your team. Shape the future of water infrastructure.

At Mott MacDonald New Zealand, we're looking for a Senior Water Technician to take a leadership role within our specialist water utility monitoring team. This is your opportunity to guide and mentor others, manage field operations, and contribute to high-impact water and wastewater projects that make a real difference across Aotearoa.

This role blends technical expertise with team leadership, offering a dynamic mix of fieldwork, data analysis, and strategic coordination. You'll be instrumental in ensuring the safety, quality, and performance of our monitoring programs—programs that underpin major infrastructure upgrades and environmental compliance.

Why this role matters

As a senior technician, you'll play a key role in delivering reliable data that informs decisions on network performance, water quality, and sustainability. You'll lead by example, fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

What you'll do

  • Lead and support a team of Water Technicians in the field
  • Manage installation, servicing, and troubleshooting of monitoring equipment
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed, especially in confined spaces and high-risk environments
  • Coordinate scheduling, logistics, and resource planning for field operations
  • Review and analyse data trends, reporting insights to engineers, scientists, and managers
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to training and development initiatives
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver project outcomes

What's in it for you

This senior role offers significant opportunities for professional growth and leadership development, including:

  • Advanced technical training in hydrology, instrumentation, and hydraulic data analysis
  • Exposure to project management and client engagement
  • Opportunities to influence team culture and operational excellence
  • A pathway to further leadership roles within Mott MacDonald

You'll be supported with comprehensive training, safety equipment, vaccinations, and ongoing career development. We'll help you grow your impact—professionally and personally.

About you

We're looking for someone who's:

  • Experienced in water network monitoring, instrumentation, or a related field
  • Confident leading small teams and coordinating field operations
  • Safety-focused, with experience working in confined spaces and outdoor environments
  • Skilled in data analysis and reporting, with basic proficiency in Word and Excel
  • A holder of a Full NZ driver's licence and legally entitled to work in NZ

A background in plumbing, drainlaying, building, or contracting is valuable. Leadership experience in technical or field-based roles is highly desirable.

Our culture

At Mott MacDonald, we value diversity, collaboration, and wellbeing. We're committed to inclusive hiring and creating a workplace where everyone can thrive. If this role resonates with you—even if you don't meet every requirement—we encourage you to apply.

We offer:

  • Competitive salary and enhanced KiwiSaver contributions
  • A supportive, purpose-driven team environment
  • Opportunities to work on high-impact projects
  • A global network with local heart
