Wakatipu High School (WHS) is thrilled to be piloting an inaugural Rugby Academy in 2026. This initiative is designed to further strengthen our rugby programme for young men and women, aligning with our vision for 'Aotearoa New Zealand's best all-round education.'

The Academy aims to develop top quality student-athletes who have the potential to represent the school at 1st XV level and beyond, focused ultimately on growing better people through sport.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled part-time Rugby Academy Coordinator and Coach to take the lead in delivering this exciting new programme.

This is a hands-on coaching role. The successful candidate will be the key coach responsible for the day-to-day delivery and operational success of the Academy sessions, fostering a high-commitment and performance culture. While you will be expected to assist with planning, the priority is the effective running of the on-field sessions. Reporting to the Deputy Principal aligned with Sport, you will shape the culture and performance of our pre-season rugby programme.

The Academy will be open to players of all levels and we'll run two weekly after-school sessions from pm with the exact day of the session negotiable with the successful candidate. This will be for the preseason phase only from the week of 26th January to the week of 4th of May.

Our programme is underpinned by 'Balance is Better' principles, strong pastoral care, and an emphasis on character, resilience, and leadership. We aim to:

  • Lead high-quality, targeted sessions to improve skills, fitness, attitude, and knowledge.
  • Develop Rugby IQ and position-specific fundamental skills.
  • Instill WHS values that make better people through sport.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and run all weekly Academy training sessions throughout the preseason for skill development, fitness, and Rugby IQ, suitable for various age groups and skill levels.
  • Assist with the planning and scheduling of engaging weekly preseason training sessions.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and other coaching staff.
  • Maintain records of participation, manage equipment, and facilitate clear communication with key stakeholders.
Essential Skills and Experience

We are looking for a candidate who is organised, professional, and committed to safe practice and player wellbeing, and who can ideally demonstrate:

  • Previous experience in a coaching capacity within the secondary school rugby environment (e.g. as a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or Director of Rugby).
  • Demonstrable experience working effectively with rangatahi (teenagers) in a school or sporting environment, with an ability to build positive relationships, inspire confidence, and promote discipline.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to build warm, professional relationships.
  • A genuine passion for developing the whole student - not just the athlete - and the ability to uphold and develop a high-commitment culture aligned with 'The Wakatipu Way'.
  • Availability for late afternoon/early evening and weekend work.
  • Organised and self-motivated.
