SPCA New Zealand provides care and protection to animals that have been victims of abuse, cruelty, neglect, or abandonment. Each year, the organization receives around 46,000 animals into their care and investigates over 14,000 complaints of animal cruelty and neglect. As the only charity with the power to protect all animals and prosecute under the Animal Welfare Act 1999, SPCA plays a crucial role in animal welfare. The organization relies almost entirely on public donations to carry out its life-saving work, receiving less than 2% of its funding from the government.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for an Animal Team Lead based in Auckland. The Animal Team Lead will be responsible for supervising and leading a team of animal care staff, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, developing care plans, organizing daily activities, and managing resources. Additionally, the role involves overseeing the intake and assessment of animals, coordinating with veterinary services, and maintaining detailed records. The Animal Team Lead will also be responsible for investigating complaints of animal cruelty or neglect.

Qualifications

  • Supervisory or team-leading experience, strong leadership and people management skills
  • Experience working with animals, knowledge of animal care and welfare practices
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work with a diverse team
  • Problem-solving skills, ability to handle stressful and emotional situations with empathy
  • Experience in investigating and documenting animal cruelty cases is a plus
  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, or a related field preferred
  • Commitment to SPCA's mission and values, strong ethical and moral principles
