Technical Animator

Job Description

Prismatic Studios is seeking a Technical Animator with strong Unreal Engine experience, capable of both creating high-quality animations and supporting the technical pipeline that brings them into the game. This role balances hands-on animation work with tool usage, workflow optimisation, and asset organisation. You'll contribute directly to animation content while also ensuring the pipeline around it remains efficient, stable, and scalable.

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys both sides of animation development: crafting animations and building the systems and workflows that support them.

, as you will collaborate closely with international teams and external partners where Chinese is the primary language of communication. Strong English communication skills are also required.

The position is a full-time on-site contract role based in Auckland, New Zealand. Please note, you must have the right to work in New Zealand to be eligible for this position.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain Unreal Engine animation systems, including Control Rigs, Animation Blueprints, retargeting setups, and blendspaces.
• Optimise and maintain animation workflows between DCC tools and Unreal Engine.
• Optimise animation assets for performance, consistency, and runtime efficiency.
• Create high-quality character animations for use in gameplay.
• Use and support animation-related tools, scripts, and pipelines to improve production efficiency.
• Troubleshoot animation, rigging, or pipeline issues across both DCC and engine environments.
• Drive the development of testing workflows and debugging tools for animations, supporting rapid iteration and system debugging.

Job Requirements

• Chinese language proficiency.
• 2+ years of experience in animation/technical art in the games industry, with at least one completed game project.
• Strong understanding of animation principles with the ability to create polished character or creature animations.
• Proficiency with animation DCC tools such as MotionBuilder or Maya, including experience in motion capture data editing and secondary creation workflows.
• Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine's animation tools, including Control Rig, Animation Blueprints, Layered Blend, Retargeting, Aim Offset, etc.
• Solid understanding of skeleton hierarchies, rigging fundamentals, and animation data structures.
• Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with animation, engineering, and design teams.
• Familiarity with animation and rigging workflows, with an understanding of how character assets integrate into animation pipelines.
• Good communication skills that support an open and enthusiastic working environment.
• Self-driven with a strong sense of quality and an eye for detail.

Additional Valuable Skills

• Experience using Houdini for procedural game workflows such as environment generation, motion processing, simulation-driven tools, or pipeline development.
• Experience developing or using debugging tools and animation testing environments.
• Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Jira, TAPD, ClickUp).
• Experience in cross-border or cross-time-zone collaboration.
