At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.
About our group and team
The purpose and goal of Te Uepū Reo Māori is to ensure that all learners aged 0-18 who commit to learning in and of the Māori language have access to quality provision and learning experiences. The group is responsible for setting the strategic direction to ensure the growth of te reo Māori, the Māori medium pathway and those learning the language.
It is through this learning journey that Māori language learners can access the Māori world and understand their role in it.
Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
The Principal Adviser provides leadership in identifying quality strategies that support the successful design, development and implementation of quality Māori language and Māori medium programmes, projects and services.
They lead programmes of work to support students to lift achievement. They provide thought leadership about how to identify success and about good curriculum development process.
They support the strategic overview of group priorities ensuring that Māori language learners and Māori medium needs are appropriately considered, and as necessary, addressed in curriculum development.

Mōhou ake | About you
**Have an understanding of**:
- The policy process
- How the school, tertiary and industry sector operates - at the school, network, partnership, local, regional and system levels - to achieve learning outcomes
- The New Zealand Qualifications Framework and local programmes and course delivery mechanisms
- The machinery of government
- The principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and their implications on operational policy within the education sector
- The significance of identity, language and culture
**Have the following skills**:
- Strategic and / or user design skills, particularly in high-ambiguity policy situations
- Ability to think strategically, identifying linkages between issues
- Excellent analytical skills including ability to lead and support the development and delivery of business cases and advice
- Ability to identify risks and effective mitigation and consistently use sound judgment on controversial or critical issues using the best evidence available
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to influence and persuade others to achieve desired results
- Proven ability to establish, build and maintain highly effective working relationships
- Ability to work flexibly across the work area
- Has a breadth and / or depth of experience which makes them a ‘go-to' person
- Resilience to deal with pressure in a mature way
- High level of cultural knowledge and competency to build relationships and operate in Te Ao Māori
