This is a rare opportunity to take an advisory role at the centre of industry and government decision-making, helping to shape the direction of the gas and wider energy markets through policy, regulation, and strategy.

About the Role

As a Principal Adviser, you'll lead complex policy and regulatory projects that impact the operation and future of the energy sector — from gas market design to consumer outcomes and infrastructure access.

You'll provide trusted, high-quality advice to senior leadership, government, and industry participants, ensuring the sector operates efficiently, transparently, and in alignment with New Zealand's energy transition goals.

Your work will include:

  • Leading and delivering substantial analytical and advisory projects across the energy value chains.
  • Developing issues and consultation papers, regulatory recommendations, and strategic insights for senior decision-makers.
  • Engaging with key stakeholders — including government agencies, market participants, and large users — to build consensus and foster collaboration.
  • Advising on policy implications, trends, and risks in a rapidly evolving energy environment.
  • Contributing to the mentoring and development of other advisers.

About You

You'll bring deep expertise in the energy sector — ideally in gas, electricity, or utilities — with a strong grasp of both commercial realities and the regulatory frameworks that govern the industry. You'll be comfortable working at the intersection of policy, regulation, and industry strategy.

We're looking for someone who offers:

  • 10+ years' experience in the energy sector - we would consider solid experience in the wider utilities sectors.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply legislation and regulation.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the confidence to engage at senior levels.
  • Exceptional analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • A reputation for delivering robust, well-considered advice under pressure.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. economics, law, public policy, engineering, or similar).
