Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
We are seeking a Principal Adviser to join our Māori Partnerships and Capability directorate which sits within Māori Partnerships and Investment (MP&I). This directorate supports our business units in lifting their capability to support the Māori Crown relationship, including partnering and engaging with Māori.
As a Principal Adviser, you will take a lead role in supporting the successful delivery of MPI's Treaty Settlement commitments. This includes ensuring business units to have a plan in place so that their respective Treaty settlement commitments are understood, upheld, and reported on as required.
The Directorate also works closely with the Māori Agribusiness directorate in providing overarching support to MPI to recognise and act on the broader opportunities presented by the Treaty settlement relationship including leveraging relationships to support iwi to achieve the full potential of their primary sector settlement assets.
**As part of this role, you will**:

- Provide intellectual leadership and expert advice to maximise the mutual benefits of Treaty settlement commitments to iwi and MPI.
- Provide expert advice on investment and partnership opportunities with Post-Settlement Governance Entities, which supports Māori primary sector growth.
- Work collaboratively across MPI to build collective understanding of Treaty responsibilities and settlement commitments and to identify and act on the opportunities they present to MPI and its Treaty partners.
- Provide advice and guidance on initiatives to lift capability across the organisation, engaging with Māori, Māori worldview, te Tiriti o Waitangi and tikanga Māori.
- Collaborate on organisational projects, share information, and practices and co-ordinate across work programmes.
- Work with key members in cross government agencies to influence and implement central agency expectations

This is a unique opportunity to partner with Māori, iwi, and hapū to achieve better outcomes for their economic development.

- A sound network of relationships within iwi Māori and across the public service.
- Significant experience writing a range of papers and documents.
- Ability to use tikanga Māori and te reo Māori to facilitate engagement processes and to effectively present information to different groups.
- Significant strategic and intellectual leadership, including experience understanding and providing solutions to complex problems.
- Sound understanding of government agency functions, understands key government processes and current Government priorities.
- Excellent relationship management and engagement skills

Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team

While this is a Wellington based role, there will be some national travel required at times, to connect with our regional teams and iwi.
MP&I are committed to creating an environment that promotes teamwork and collaboration, to ensure that everyone is contributing to our success and achieving collective goals. As a Principal Adviser, you would also promote guidance and mentoring opportunities for our junior colleagues to help uplift branch capability.
