We're seeking a highly skilled executive leader (Deputy Chief Executive) to lead our International and Governance group. The purpose of the New Zealand Customs Service is to protect New Zealand's border using world class tools, people and innovative approaches. Our Māori name - Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa - translates as "the authority that screens and protects New Zealand." **About this role| Mō tēnei tūranga mahi** Based in either the Wellington or Auckland Customhouse and reporting to Customs' Comptroller (Chief Executive), the Deputy Chief Executive (DCE) International and Governance leads a group of approximately 65 staff, including five direct reports. In this role you will also be part of Customs Executive Board (CEB) and Customs Senior Leadership Team (CSLT). The International and Governance Group comprises: International, Stakeholder Communications, Risk, Security and Assurance and Governance. The Deputy Chief Executive (DCE) International and Governance is a solution orientated and innovative leader, who enables Customs to meet its strategic objectives by leading the International and Governance Group. Your role is responsible for domestic and international stakeholder engagement, independent assurance of Customs' processes, controls and risk management, and Customs' international strategy and support for Customs' staff posted overseas. This role is also responsible for strategic leadership in the areas of stakeholder engagement, communications, media management, correspondence reviews, and ministerial services. **To be successful in this role you will need to be able to demonstrate the following**: - Proven success achieving results in a senior leadership role with a sound knowledge of strategic, operational, and business management principles in government or relevant commercial environments. This includes successfully managing complex operational business groups. - Successful track record of developing and executing strategies that translate organisational priorities into goals, and drive performance whilst identifying and mitigating risks and managing costs. - Strong people leadership skills and experience. - Building and maintaining relationships with other senior leaders within the organisation and across the public sector, and with international partner agencies. - Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including the ability to speak in public and achieve buy-in from external stakeholders, which include industry leaders, other government agencies (domestic and overseas) and Government Ministers and officials. - International cultural competence, as well as a working knowledge and understanding of Māori culture, Tikanga and the Treaty of Waitangi. - Excellent knowledge of the conventions, structure and functions of Government and their relationship to the work of the New Zealand Customs Service and the machinery of Government. - A tertiary qualification at least equivalent to bachelor's level or demonstrated equivalent knowledge, experience, and skills. - A security clearance to a "Top-Secret" level is required for this position.
