Health New Zealand is undergoing a fundamental reset as we move as many of our resources as possible closer to our patients, families and communities to reduce waiting times and strengthen clinical safety and quality. A critical objective of the reset is to reverse the more recent multi-year trend of increasing waiting times for essential patient services.
The more immediate and key elements of the reset include:

- Accelerated devolution to the regions, bringing resources and decision making as close to communities as possible.
- Enhanced clinical involvement and engagement to help shape the way the organisation will operate with all critical recommendations being made within a clinical frame of reference.
- Enhanced productivity to maximise patient access and increase the value we provide from our existing resources.
- Clearer accountabilities for all management and staff to achieve more timely access for our patients.
- Improved workplace safety.

This new role which reports into the Commissioner will influence and give effect to the strategic outcomes of New Zealand's public health system by providing critical analysis and guidance to the Commissioner on system wide decisions that impact all New Zealanders.
