Assistant Manager - Exotic Mammal Section

We have a fantastic opportunity for a suitably skilled person to help lead our Exotic Mammal Team and assist in overseeing our entire Exotic Animal Collection. This position, reporting to the Exotic Species Manager, is a key part of the Park’s animal management team. We are seeking to employ a highly skilled keeper with experience in a supervisory role i.e. team leader/2IC. You will need to be a highly driven and energetic individual with a passion for wildlife.

The ideal applicant will possess the following skills and attributes:
Experience and a proven track record in a supervisory/lead keeper/2IC position, within a modern zoo overseeing/managing a team of people

Significant husbandry experience across the collection including primates, carnivores and ungulates

Cheetah is a flagship species at Orana and experience in breeding this species would be considered a distinct advantage

Proven experience in training and conditioning programmes

Sound knowledge of required biosecurity and health & safety compliance requirements within a zoo

Animal collection planning experience will be considered an advantage including breeding plan implementation and animal introductions

Experience in preparing animals for transfer and experience in completing quarantines for new and/or sick animals according to requirements

Good written and verbal communication skills

A mature attitude, with experience in building quality internal and external relationships

An appropriate tertiary qualification is considered an advantage

Basic maintenance skills, e.g. minor fencing and irrigation repairs

**Duties will include**:
Ensuring that the highest possible ethical and welfare standards are met in relation to the Park’s exotic animal collection to a level of internationally accepted best practice

Providing daily care and welfare to a variety of animals including ungulates, carnivores (large and small), primates and other small exotic species

Assisting in the management of the Exotic Section animal keepers and animals, as the primary ‘field’ person for the section, in liaison with the Exotic Species Manager

Implementation of zoological programmes, including oversight of key breeding programmes and training and conditioning programmes across a broad range of taxa

Creative input to new developments and upgrades to existing facilities and exhibits as part of the animal management team

Conducting fun, informative presentations to educate visitors on the plight of exotic fauna

Identifying and developing new visitor experiences that will enhance attendance

Training of staff including induction, refresher and professional development training

One-off and on-going projects and programmes aimed at enhancing the zoo

Implementing the organisation’s Health and Safety and Safe Operating Procedures

Contributing as a key member of the Park’s animal management team to sound decisions on future directions

The working week for the position will be 40 hours per week. This work roster may include working one or both weekend days. Hours of work are 8:30am to 5:00pm. The salary for the position will be negotiated with the successful applicant in the range from $64,000 up to a maximum of $72,000. Salary will be in accordance with skills and experience.
