We are seeking Principal's to bring their leadership, skills and experience to the Data & Insights Directorate at Te Puni Kōkiri.

Te Puni Kōkiri, the Ministry of Māori Development, supports and works in partnership with the Government to design and deliver policies, as well as innovative targeted investment initiatives that have a significant and positive impact on Māori.

- Providing strategic advice and leadership that strengthens the official data system and the capabilities of those who engage with it;
- Identifying and bringing together existing data from a range of sources which can tell the story of Māori wellbeing;
- Providing credible, evidence-based advice that is anchored in the cultural context of Māori;
- Leading robust analysis, research and evaluation;
- Building strong relationships with policy teams to support evidence-based decision making which can make a difference to Māori;
- Understanding the data and analytics aspirations and challenges for Māori-focused organisations;
- Liaising with government agencies and Māori data practitioners on a wide range of interesting data and insights kaupapa;
- Contributing strategically to data governance frameworks and approaches and meaningful ways to implement the theory into practice;
- Providing mentorship, guidance, and support to kaimahi from the Data & Insights Directorate to support their own development pathways.
Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity
The Data & Insights Directorate is seeking professionals who are:
- Self-aware, agile, curious, honest and courageous;
- Experienced in leading significant data, analysis, research, and/or evaluation projects;
- Skilled in developing and maintaining strong, positive working relationships;
- Set apart by their ability to support and coach others.
As a directorate, our role is to strengthen policy and decision making through high quality data, evidence, and insights. The three teams we are recruiting Principal Advisors & Analysts for are:
- Data & Analytics - supports scaling our analytical capability across the organisation via tools, governance, processes, people and products.
- Insights - provides compelling data and insights into key policy focus areas.
- Research and Evaluation - delivers research and evaluations that build Te Puni Kokiri's evidence base.
The Principal Advisors or Analysts will be responsible for leading and overseeing work programmes, providing technical expertise and advice, and supporting and mentoring other team members. Whilst the Principals' will sit within the individual teams, they will be expected to work collaboratively to provide support across the directorate. The roles will include proactively developing relationships within and outside the organisation to build collaboration, and to ensure Te Puni Kōkiri is positioned to have the most impact on improving outcomes for Māori.

These opportunities are a good fit for people with strong communication, relationship management and influencing skills, along with highly developed technical skills and proven experience using quantitative and/or qualitative data and information to support evidence-informed decision making.
**The common criteria for success are**:
- Proven experience leading significant data, analysis, research, and/or evaluation projects across government agencies and with diverse stakeholders.
- A high standard of written and verbal communication, and experience communicating data and insights to a range of audiences.
- The ability to build, maintain and enhance strategic relationships within Te Puni Kōkiri, and with government departments, Māori, and other key stakeholder groups.
- Highly developed conceptual, analytical, and critical reasoning skills and experience in developing and implementing workable solutions to complex problems.
- Experience of, and a commitment to, coaching and mentoring less experienced team members.
- A good understanding of tikanga Māori and experience using kaupapa Māori approaches in your work.
