As an Assistant Research Fellow, you will work on studies being conducted by the Dunedin Colorectal Cohort, within the Department of Surgical Sciences.
This is a challenging position, which requires a high degree of organisational skills, excellent oral and written communication, and the ability to work independently.
This position is based in the Surgical Sciences Department, with responsibilities across the Division of Health Sciences and close liaison with Southern Community Laboratories and Te Whatu Ora - Southern.
The role includes the recruitment and ongoing maintenance of the Dunedin Colorectal Cohort and assistance, advice and study co-ordination for other investigator-led research studies undertaken at University of Otago and Te Whatu Ora - Southern, as directed by the Principal Investigator of the DNCRC, particularly for those requiring biospecimen and patient data collection.
Key tasks may include:
- Patient recruitment - including identification, review of inclusion criteria, approaching potential participants, obtaining written consent.
- Biospecimen collection and processing - including blood and tissue collection, liaison between theatre and pathology staff, processing and distribution to research teams, retrieval of FFPE blocks, record keeping.
- Biospecimen management - including lab oversight, stocktaking and health and safety.
- Database management and development - including creating layouts, entering of clinical data, regular outcome follow up, exporting subsets of data for approved researchers.
- Drafting of reports, Standard Operating Procedures, fact sheets, estimates and invoices.
- Meeting co-ordination, organisation, and management.
- Liaison with individual researchers and research teams to assist with project planning, and ethical approval.

- High scientific literacy in biology - knowledge of cancer biology, host cell responses to cancer and genetics of cancer and host cells.
- High technical and scientific expertise in blood and tissue collection in order to advise clinical staff on collection and storage protocols.
- An ability to establish rapport with patients and communicate complex science ideas to lay members of the public.
- An ability to communicate ethical issues around sample collection, storage and data use to both patients and scientists.
- An ability to work independently.
- Excellent time management and organisational skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and an ability to work as part of a team.
- Excellent spoken and written communications skills.
- A high ethical standard of work, trustworthiness, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Willing to become culturally competent in te ao Māori.
