The Biochemistry Department is a large research and teaching department housed in a well-equipped building. It is part of the University of Otago, located in Dunedin, a culturally vibrant and diverse university city.
**_ The role/Te mahi_**
As an Assistant Research Fellow, this position will assist with bacterial gene expression studies alongside Associate Professor Chris Brown, as part of a Marsden funded project, ‘New ways of Terminating gene expression in bacteria’.
In this role, you will work as part of a collaborative research team carrying out research aimed at finding new antibiotics to treat diseases caused by streptococci. This will include gene cloning and performing quantitative experiments in bacteria.
**_ Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako_**
- BSc, BSc(Hons) or MSc in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biotechnology or a related discipline.
- Expertise in gene expression in bacteria, particularly Streptococci is highly desirable.
- Careful and meticulous record-keeping and experimental work.
- Excellent computer skills.
- An ability to learn new skills quickly.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to contribute to general laboratory activities.
- An ability to work accurately and with attention to detail.
- Self-motivation and be able to work unsupervised.
- Excellent organisational skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
