The Department of Pathology is one of eight departments within the Dunedin School of Medicine, Dunedin. The Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical and health science student teaching and supervision of postgraduate research students.

The Department houses several internationally recognised research groups and has six major research areas including Cancer Biology, Clinical Pathology, Development, Genetics and Epigenetics, Haematology and Immunotherapy.

**_ The role/Te mahi_**

As an Assistant Research Fellow, you will undertake laboratory work on the Health Research Council Project investigating the functions of p53 isoforms and their clinical translation.

In this role you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the research project. This will include data acquisition, contribution to data analyses and management of laboratory facilities.
- Key tasks of the role include:

- Collection and management of human tissue samples (fresh frozen and FFPE) database for the project.
- DNA and RNA extraction from fresh frozen and FFPE tissue samples.
- cDNA synthesis followed by RT-qPCR and ddPCR.
- NGS library preparation sequencing and analysis for identifying TP53 mutations (Nanopore and Illumina platforms).
- Experience in a diagnostic or other accredited laboratory would be beneficial.
- Assisting in training of postgraduate students and junior research staff in the laboratory.
- Assisting with management of laboratory facilities to ensure efficient and productive research.
- Data curation, analyses, and reporting.
- Participating in the drafting of manuscripts for submission to journals.

**_ Your skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako_**
- Relevant experience and a suitable tertiary qualification are essential - minimum BMLSc, Honours, or PGDipMLSc, MMLSc or MSc degree in molecular diagnostics or another laboratory medicine discipline, cell biology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology biochemistry, genetics or a related discipline.
- Experience in molecular biology techniques including but not limited to DNA and RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and RT-qPCR.
- Experience in cell culture.
- Computer literacy particularly in data management.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and analyse data.
- An ability to work independently and to progress the project to completion.

As this is role involves collaborative work, you are expected to have well-developed interpersonal communication skills and have the ability to write clearly and contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts.
