This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and building a team who sit at the juncture between creativity and technology in a company that continues to push the boundaries of the VFX craft.
As the Department Manager you will be responsible for overseeing all scheduled work and managing the department crew. The role is primarily planning and resource-based, closely managing and supporting crew and overseeing all department deliverables.
- Maintain an overview of department schedule and manage resource requirements, working with VFX Producers, Production Managers and Associate Production Managers.
- Ensure weekly departmental progress reports are delivered to Show Production in the form of tasks completed, resource plan updates and schedule updates
- Along with the Department HoD, ensure any planned development work related to the dept tools or pipeline is factored into any shows.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the requirements and challenges of incoming shows shared across the department.
- Effectively identify and triage critical technical and/or creative show challenges (risks and issues) and prioritise problem-solving discussions and initiatives to successfully address these.
- Forecast resource requirements for the department - identifying key shortfalls and anticipating surplus crew scenarios
- In collaboration with the HOD, recruit high performing artists. Monitor recruitment activity within the department, the quality of incoming artists and the global hiring outlook in the key department disciplines.
- Working with the HoD to identify areas where development of crew skill sets can benefit current or upcoming projects.
- Ensure that all artists within the department receive meaningful feedback on their work and behaviour as part of an ongoing dialogue that supports their professional growth and development.
- Approve artist leave and formulate coverage plans for any artist absence to ensure project targets are not compromised.
Our ideal Department Manager has excellent communications skills with proven scheduling experience (a working knowledge of Shotgun a plus). You’ll be an effective crew manager who fosters career development within the team and possess strong leadership qualities, with the confidence to front department plans and form solid partnership with Dept HoD.
At Wētā FX we celebrate our diversity and believe in creating an environment where all our crew feel welcomed, respected, supported and appreciated. We define ourselves by the quality of our work, and we’re striving to build a workplace experience that’s second to none. Here at Wētā FX we value open minds and encourage our crew to be themselves.
