Wētā FX is looking for a Department Manager to join our Creatures team.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and building a team who is quick to adapt to a variety of workflows and project requirements.

The Creatures Department spans from the asset work when providing puppets and rigs for Motion and Camera departments, to simulating muscles, skin, hair, feathers and cloth to meet shot requirements and providing bakes for Lighting.

As the Creatures Department Manager you will be responsible for managing the department crew and overseeing all scheduled work. The role is primarily supporting and managing crew, planning, resource-based and overseeing all department deliverables.
- Be able to build a healthy team environment, provide constructive feedback and work with artists to create career goals and pathways
- Foster a collaborative team of artists that are spread across different locations and time zones.
- Work with the HoD to identify areas where development of crew skill sets will benefit projects and/or crew progression
- Maintain an overview of department schedule and manage resource requirements, working with VFX Producers, Production Managers and central production
- Ensure weekly departmental progress reports are delivered to Show Production in the form of tasks completed, resource plan updates and schedule updates
- Oversee all scheduling across the department, proactively identifying issues and risks, acting as a problem-solving resolution point for these within the department and in conjunction with other departments.
- Forecast resource requirements for the department - identifying key shortfalls and anticipating surplus crew scenarios
- Approve artist leave and formulate coverage plans for any artist absence to ensure project targets are not compromised.

Our ideal Creatures Department Manager has excellent communications skills with proven people management skills. You’ll be an effective crew manager who fosters career development within the team and possess strong leadership qualities, with the confidence to front department plans, meetings and form a solid partnership with the Dept HoD. You’ll have experience working with a wide range of people, scheduling and resourcing artists with multiple disciplines across multiple projects (a working knowledge of Shotgun is a plus) and most importantly have a growth mindset.
