Archives New Zealand, Te Rua Mahara o te Kawanatanga, exists to regulate, preserve, and make accessible the record of government, as an independent, trusted steward. We care for and provide appropriate access to over seven million archives that are precious to New Zealand - taonga tuku iho, to be cared for on behalf of future generations - both physical and digital formats side by side.

There is a small team that supports Archives NZ’s core software system to do this, and we currently have a fixed-term opportunity for an Application Specialist to focus on large and complex born-digital acquisitions, starting with the Abuse in Care Royal Commission archives (RCI).

Working on this kaupapa you’ll develop your skills in data and metadata, archival workflows, digital preservation, and information security, and you’ll help us develop pipelines which will improve our capabilities for the future. You’ll be building on at least five years experience in a similar role, preferably working with vendor-provided API programming languages, large spreadsheets or Extract Transform Load tools, and downstream accessibility within agreed parameters.

This role runs until June 2027 and is part of a project to ingest and make RCI records accessible. This will entail understanding the data’s structure in its source system (Relativity), in the target system (Axiell Collections using C and ADAPL, and the web service Arena), and with related systems e.g. digital preservation (Rosetta) and security (the DIA environment).
