As owner and operator of the National Grid, our transmission network consists of 170 substations, 25,000 transmission towers, and more than 11,000 kilometres of lines across public and privately held land - transporting bulk electricity (up to 220,000 volts) from where it is generated to cities, towns, and some major industrial users.As System Operator we operate the wholesale electricity market and ensure supply (provided by generators) matches demand (by electricity users). We are also responsible for ensuring New Zealand's electricity system is reliable, competitive, and innovative as we play an integral role in the planning of New Zealand's electricity future.
About the TeamThe System Operator Power Systems group is responsible for providing power system analysis and engineering, as well as collaborating across our Operations team on risk, event review, and assurance to enable Transpower to successfully operate the New Zealand electricity market and power system today and into the future.
About the OpportunityThis is your chance to work in a complex, intellectually stimulating environment that provides a unique and essential service to Aotearoa New Zealand. You'll work collaboratively to ensure:
- Transpower's risk framework is implemented and championed within the Operations division, so risks to our ability to safely operate the Grid, power, and market systems are identified, controlled, monitored, and regularly reported on to our Senior Leadership Team and Regulator.
- We are delivering our System Operator obligations for assurance activities and preparedness for managing business continuity and disaster recovery events.
- We have processes to review power system and market events and learn from these.
What will you bring?You will thrive and be quick to learn in a complex and an essential operational environment. You'll demonstrate exceptional organisational skills, common sense, and logical, systemic thinking to grasp a busy work programme and what's required in this multifaceted role.You'll have exceptional relationship management skills as in this role you'll need to work with a wide range of people in our Operations division - our engineers, market specialists, real-time control centre teams, our General Manager, the Senior Leadership Team, our corporate risk and assurance team, and other General Managers across Transpower.
You may have experience in one of these areas - risk, assurance, business continuity planning, or event review, but have an interest in broadening your experience to the others, in a growing electricity sector which is essential to enabling NZ's net zero carbon goals.
Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate a relevant degree qualification and:
- Previous experience effectively engaging and advising a work programme
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills including facilitation and consensus-building skills
- Strong problem-solving skills; you'll be comfortable tackling complex problems and breaking these down into manageable pieces.
- ~ 5 years or more across at least one of these areas: operational risk management, assurance, business continuity, and event review.
**While not essential, it would be advantageous if you have**:
- Knowledge of the electricity industry
- Knowledge and experience in Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS)
- Knowledge and experience of bowtie and Semi Quantitative Risk Assessment (SQRA) methodologies.
- Knowledge and experience in business continuity planning for a 24/7 business providing a critical service
