- Bring your passion for helping people, dispute resolution, problem solving and facilitation to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) employment dispute resolution service.
- 12 months fixed term full-time position, Tauranga or Hamilton Tēnei tūranga - About the Role: Mediators play a critical role under the provisions of the Employment Relations Act, and they're involved in a wide range of employment relations activities - from assisting in the development of good employment relationships in the workplace; to facilitating and supporting employment bargaining and fair pay agreements and helping people resolve employment relationship problems and disputes by providing both early assistance and formal mediation services.
Demand for employment mediation services is high and the opportunities that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented has allowed our service to adapt and become more flexible in our service offering. You will enjoy working in an often fast paced and dynamic environment utilising a range of different approaches in your practice to meet our client’s service needs. This will likely include a mix of in-person, videoconference, shuttle, or telephone type service delivery.
You will also enjoy the variety that we can offer through occasional circuiting to alternative locations within your region to meet our client’s needs outside of our main centres.
**About you**:
You are someone who ideally has experience working in mediation, dispute resolution, law, collective or interest-based bargaining or facilitation. But most important is your passion to help workers and workplaces work through their disputes, recover broken relationships, and resolve differences.
You are open-minded, engaging and enjoy working with people across a range of different cultures and backgrounds. Your positive attitude, excellent communication, stakeholder relationship skills and professional know-how will bring about positive outcomes.
Above else, dispute resolution is in your veins and your mana and making a positive difference for people matters to you
**What this role will give you**:
As a Mediator within the Employment Mediation Service, you will get to help people in employment related disputes to achieve resolution and in rare circumstances you may be called upon to make decisions that are final and binding.
You will have access to extensive professional development on the job and will be able to use your broad skills to work with multiple groups through collective and interest-based bargaining, training, and facilitation opportunities. Our professional development and career progression

As part of an Aotearoa wide national service, you will be part of our fantastic, diverse and dynamic team of Capability and Early Resolution Officers, Case Managers and Mediators. You will have the benefit of an extensive peer support and community of practice network of like-minded professional’s all working collectively towards creating positive outcomes for the people of Aotearoa.

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and Experience Required
- An understanding of the drivers of conflict, disputes, and relationship issues
- An understanding of workplace and employment relations
- Previous experience as a mediator or similar an advantage
- Experience with collective and interest-based bargaining an advantage
- Ability to work confidentially and professionally within emotionally charged environments
- Experience working with Māori, Pasifika and other peoples and cultures an advantage
- Knowledge of New Zealand law and employment law in particular
- Ability to earn the confidence and respect of employers, employees, unions, practitioners and other stakeholders
- Ability to work effectively using a range of different mediation methods (in-person, videoconference, shuttle or telephone as required)
- Able to constructively contribute to the objectives of the Employment Relations Act
- Accreditation from a dispute resolution professional body (either AMINZ or Resolution Institute) or willingness to complete this qualification
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment
