**Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi - About the Role**

The Student Advisor - Kaitaunaki at Ara Institute of Canterbury provides holistic, learner-centered support from enrolment to graduation, combining academic guidance, career readiness, employment transition support, and pastoral care into a unified advisory model. With expertise in supporting Māori and Pacific learners, the role ensures culturally responsive practice, collaborates across departments, and uses data to inform decisions - all while aligning with national regulations like the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. Central to the role is fostering student wellbeing, autonomy, and active partnership in shaping their educational experience.

**Ngā Pūkenga Me Ngā Wheako - Skills and Experience**
- Demonstrated experience working effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds
- Evidence of skills in working with Māori whānau, iwi, hapu and community networks and individuals, groups or agencies providing support and/or services
- Excellent communication skills, especially listening and questioning
- Experience and thorough understanding of and commitment to high quality service provision
- An understanding of both the academic, career and pastoral needs of tertiary students
- An understanding of the demands of a tertiary learning environment, particularly as this impacts Māori and Pacific learners
- Ability to facilitate joint problem solving in the tertiary education environment
- Ability to identify early intervention strategies and proactively support learners through challenges
- Demonstrated experience in student support, academic advising, or career guidance within the education sector
- Knowledge of equity practices and experience supporting diverse student populations
- Ability to build meaningful relationships with ākonga and kaimahi across diverse backgrounds
- Data-driven problem-solving and analytical skills
- Adaptability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional environment
- Willingness to engage with emerging technologies to enhance service delivery
- Effective organisational skills
- Excellent time management
