As part of Fisheries New Zealand's commitment to strengthening our partnership with Māori, a new Fisheries and Aquaculture Treaty Partnerships Directorate has been formed. As Manager Customary Fisheries, you will join the growing Directorate and lead the Customary Fisheries Team to support decision-making through advice related to Customary Fisheries and deliver tangible outcomes. You will be instrumental to the strategic and operational leadership of the Customary Fisheries Team and will lead a team of Relationship Managers responsible for ensuring we continue to build and maintain strong relationships with iwi and hapū for the Crown to effectively deliver its fisheries obligations.

**Your core responsibilities in this role would include**:

- Implementing the Customary Fishing Regulations.
- Developing and maintaining regional Iwi Fisheries Forums and supporting the forums to develop Forum and Iwi Fisheries Plans.
- Providing support for input and participation of tangata whenua into managing fisheries by assisting development of fisheries objectives and ensuring fisheries advice gives regard to kaitiakitanga.
- Modelling collaborative working and fostering a high-performing team environment.
- Ensuring the team and its activities deliver best value for money through astute financial and resource management.
- Collaborating with Fisheries NZ and business partners across MPI to support the delivery of outcomes.

**We are looking for someone who**:

- Can build trusted and credible relationships with Māori, sector stakeholders, and partners across Fisheries New Zealand, MPI, other New Zealand Government agencies and service providers.
- Has demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with tangata whenua.
- Understands management policies relating to the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Crown's obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Claims Settlement Act, the Fisheries Act 1996, and other statutes as they relate to fisheries resources.
- Has confidence managing difficult relationships, with sound experience in achieving beneficial outcomes through negotiation and conflict management.
- Has a deep understanding of Te Ao Māori.
- Has strong people management skills and ability to build a collaborative team culture.
- Has a proven track record for driving capability uplift and supporting professional development.
- Is fluent in Te Reo Māori (this is desirable but not essential).
