Kōrero mō te Tūranga - About the Role
This is a new role. Why has it been established? We are now dealing with a number of large data sets as a result of Fisheries New Zealand's investment in Digital Monitoring products. These data sets are generated from electronic reporting on commercial vessels, daily catch numbers, and vessel positional information. The upcoming onboard cameras programme will also be providing independent, accurate information about fishing activity and better evidence for decision-making. Your role will be two-fold. You'll stand up a new team, of which, some members may come from within the Science & Information Directorate. You'll question how far we can push this data to provide insights needed to enhance decision making excellence. We're looking for someone who can lead a team to provide fresh perspective and innovative ways to provide predictive modelling, risk assessment, economic analysis, outlier analysis, interactive reporting and more, across a wide array of structured, unstructured and geospatial data sets.
Your key responsibilities for this role will include, but is not limited to:
- Establishing a capability development and delivery plan to build our fisheries analytics capabilities in line with the digital investment plan.
- Lead and manage Fisheries New Zealand's analytical functions, with a focus on delivering and enhancing new analytical products that meet business needs.
- Ensure business plans relating to the Directorate's core data and analytics functions align to Fisheries New Zealand's strategic priorities.
- Strengthen the relationship with business partners, such as the centralised ICT function and other analytics teams across MPI.
- Seek opportunities to continuously improve data quality and the utility of fisheries data and analytical products.
- Ensure Fisheries New Zealand's governance and assurance practices are robust and preserve the integrity and credibility of fisheries data and important fisheries management decisions.

Administrative, financial and personnel, and systems and processes are all things you're familiar with.
**To be successful in this role, you will have**:
- Relevant experience in analytics, data management services and ICT systems
- Knowledge of strategic and business planning processes
- Experience in analysing technical issues and making business decisions with financial impact
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with people at all levels in an organisation, with Minsters and across the public service, as well as with tangata whenua, and with other stakeholders
- Understanding of management polices relating to the Treaty principles and the crown's obligations to Maori under the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Claims Settlement Act and other statutes as they relate to fisheries resources

This new team will sit within our Science and Information Directorate in Fisheries New Zealand - Tini a Tangaroa and will work alongside the Fisheries Data Management Team (~11 people). Fisheries New Zealand is a branded business unit within the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and works to ensure that fisheries resources are managed in a way that provides the greatest overall benefit to New Zealanders.
