Senior Adviser / Adviser - Customary Fishing (2 vacancies)

About the Role - Kōrero mō te tūranga
As a Senior Adviser / Adviser in our Spatial Planning & Allocations team you will deliver evidence-based advice and enable key decisions on the delivery of fisheries outcomes for Māori. You will gather information from direct engagement with a range of groups and develop high-quality written advice to enable decisions and deliver outcomes.
This is not your standard adviser role, the work we do is challenging, balancing the interests of different groups to deliver outcomes that help support the resilience of ecosystems and fisheries. You will be working with Māori and a diverse range of stakeholders including government officials, fishing interests, fisheries scientists and local communities. Your ability to deliver high-quality written advice will be crucial to enabling effective Government intervention to secure the benefits of a healthy and productive marine environment.

You will have excellent writing skills and a meticulous eye for detail. You will be positive and personable and good at engaging with colleagues, clients and stakeholders to get the job done. Preferably, you'll have experience and understanding of domestic fisheries issues although this is not essential.
**You will bring**:
- Strong writing skills & attention to detail as you will be involved in providing advice to Ministers.
- Experience as an adviser or analyst in a resource management, regulatory, or policy role within regional or central government.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships.
- A strong track record of achieving results.
- A “can do” attitude with attention to detail and a strong focus on successful delivery of outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience in project management desired.
- Ability to deal with ambiguity and adaptable to shift gears when required.
About the branch - Mō te peka
The Fisheries Management Directorate carries out the full range of statutory regulatory functions, duties, and powers to manage New Zealand's fisheries resources, including:
- Information and advice relating to the aquatic environment and maintaining marine biodiversity.
- Fish stock assessments to underpin fisheries management decisions.
- Collecting independent, reliable information on commercial fisheries and verifying fishing activity.
Our directorate is also responsible for the development and implementation of national standards, National Plans of Actions (NPOAs), National Fisheries Plans, and all other aspects of the operational policy framework for fisheries management.
