Christchurch, New Zealand Christchurch City Council Full time

Working at the Christchurch City Council gives you an opportunity to collectively enrich this city we call home. Work with like-minded individuals on projects, services and facilities for our communities and environment. You'll make a positive impact on our future while enjoying a rewarding career full of opportunities - Christchurch City Council, where it's possible to love what you do.

The Civic and International Relations team is based in the Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive and works with other Council teams, other organisations (across the city, nationally & internationally), and the community. The team influences and shapes the international relationships of Ōtautahi Christchurch to enhance wellbeing, and champion Christchurch and collaborate to build our role as a leading New Zealand city. The team also manages a range of high-profile civic and ceremonial events, including royal visits, earthquake anniversary commemorations, ANZAC Day commemorations, citizenship ceremonies and others.

We have an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Civic and International Relations Advisor.

As an advisor, you will lead or support the planning and delivery of international relations work such as the Mayor's international travel engagements, and the visits of international delegations, with a focus on Asia and North America. Having oversight of and influencing the international work of all key organisations across the city is an increasingly important part of the role. This requires strategic planning and strong relationships. You will also lead or support planning and delivery of civic events such as those noted above - including providing ceremonial/protocol advice for the Mayor and Elected Members. You will act frequently as the Council's 'front of house' for external stakeholders, including international Consulates, Embassies, community groups and other organisations with international connections.

The position would suit someone who is internationally astute, an experienced relationship manager, has a strategic/analytical mindset, shows initiative, and has a keen eye for detail. The following areas are of particular interest to us:

- Communication and relationship management: the ability to engage confidently with diverse groups of people, and to express yourself clearly and succinctly both verbally and in writing.
- Strong strategic planning skills and active risk management: ensuring that activities and events are beneficial, seamless and successful.
- Critical thinking: identifying both opportunities and areas for improvement in the way the city manages its international relationships and civic programme.
- Teamwork: a willingness to work closely and load-share within a small team environment, including the ability to work out of hours as required.
- Pragmatism: finding a way to achieve success despite obstacles or challenges.
- Foreign language skills are desirable but not essential.

In return, we can offer you the chance to work on a range of interesting and high-profile civic and international projects, often in close liaison with the Mayor and other senior decision-makers.
