Christchurch, New Zealand Christchurch City Council Full time

The Office of the Mayor and Chief Executive (OMCE) provides support and advice to assist the Mayor, Councillors and Chief Executive to fulfil their Council, community, civic and policy leadership roles. Within OMCE, the Advisors Team support the Mayor and CE by ensuring they receive high quality advice while engaging and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

We need an experienced Principal Advisor to support the Mayor to maintain and develop external and internal relationships & liaison including government relationships, and other key regional and sector bodies (Canterbury Mayoral Forum, the Greater Christchurch Partnership, LGNZ), and fellow elected members.

You will work in a small team of advisors complementing and supporting other strategic and tactical advice to the Mayor, on a diverse range of matters from across the Council's business. The team provides high quality, impartial, free and frank strategy and policy advice and ensures accurate information is available to support the Mayor's priorities, decision making, risks and issue management, and all engagements (internal and external).

You will support the Mayor to develop and articulate their vision for Christchurch, particularly through the Mayor's leadership of the Council's plans, policies and budget. You will provide advice on council agendas, reports, briefings, keeping the Mayor informed of emerging risks. You will also provide support to the Mayor at briefings, meetings and other events as required, including speech writing.

The nature of the working environment means that requests can be time sensitive, diverse and draw on many parts of the organisation's activities and services, requiring you to interact with a variety of people from within the Council organisation, as well as Elected Members and citizens, so the ability to quickly establish and maintain excellent working relationships will be second nature.

The nature of the role requires an excellent risk radar, political acumen, and the ability to facilitate and contribute to often complex policy advice from across the organisation. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including a grounded, plain-language approach, the ability to thrive under pressure and attention to detail are essential.

The role will initially be on a three year fixed term basis to match the term of the Mayor Elect.

You'll join a busy and stimulating office. We're a small team who understand the importance of working collaboratively whilst being self-starters, and we expect you're the same. You will also be joining an organisation that offers professional and personal development opportunities and an inclusive and collaborative culture. If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, then we'd like to hear from you.

Enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that your work is making an active contribution to supporting the Mayor and Chief Executive to deliver on their vision for Ōtautahi - Christchurch.

Feel like you don't meet every single requirement of the job description?
