Te tūnga | The role
This role is Permanent and based in Christchurch. Reporting to the Manager Construction and Property Statistics, your focus is to be the technical leader of the construction and property statistics team.
The Construction and Property Statistics team produces timely data and insights about construction, property, and housing to enable evidence-based decision making that improves the lives of current and future generations. The team is made up of ten people who produce four regular statistical outputs related to building consents, building activity, property transfers and ready mixed concrete production.
In this role, you will be responsible for the technical leadership of our construction and property statistics including:

- Value of building work put in place combines administrative and survey data in a longitudinal statistical model to estimate the value of construction in the economy. You will lead the development of an improved longitudinal statistical model and the exploration of alternative data sources. This work is likely to take 2-3 years and will build on both current practice and preliminary research using best-practice survey methodology and data science tools and techniques.
- Experimental building indicators provide a measure of the time taken on building projects in Aotearoa and an estimate of the number of new dwellings built. You will influence improvements to this experimental data collection.

**The day-to-day activities of the role include**:

- Leading the redesign of the methodology and processes of our building activity statistics.
- Providing expert technical advice on our statistical process for internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide ongoing technical coaching and mentoring to staff producing regular statistical releases.
- Developing and championing the adoption and use of best practice methodologies to lift capability across the organisation.
- Supervising the troubleshooting and continuous improvement of our statistical tools, processes, and systems.
- Engaging regularly with internal and external stakeholders, to understand their needs and communicate the technical limitations of our data.
- Writing technical documents that communicate ideas for a wide range of audiences both internally and externally.
