At Manatū Hauora we are the kaitiaki of the health system, providing leadership and driving strategy and performance. We regulate the health sector and are the primary source of advice on health matters. As we move away from the response to the Covid pandemic now is the time to look to the future, to ensure New Zealanders are cared for by a health system that is innovative, future focussed and world leading.
The Public Health Agency (PHA) is a new and distinctly, branded business unit being established within the Ministry. It will lead population and public health policy, strategy, regulatory, intelligence, surveillance and monitoring functions across the system.

Ko tōu ake mahi - What You'll Do
As an integral member of the Office of the Director of Public health (ODPH) you will make a significant contribution to strategies and policy that address health inequity and improve health outcomes. The ODPH is the central source of expert clinical advice and leadership on all public health strategy, policy and regulatory matters. You will convene clinical expertise from across the system which will influence Government priorities, policy and strategy. You will be part of a team with vision and commitment and make a positive contribution to the elimination of health inequities and improvements in health outcomes through participation in cross functional teams across Te Pou Hauora Tūmatanui, Manatū Hauora and the wider public health system.
Hybrid working available, and the role could be based in Wellington, Auckland or Christchurch or other base by mutual agreement.

Ko ngā pukenga ōu - What You'll Bring
- Significant public health clinical leadership experience, with proven skills in delivering through collaboration and influence
- Experience and credibility as a public health leader, strategic systems thinker and with ability to work in ambiguity, exercise good judgement and with political awareness
- An ability to work in complex environments, and with a wide range of diverse stakeholders that are internal and external to the Ministry
- An understanding and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.
- An understanding of health determinants and health equity.
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively with Māori communities.
- A tertiary qualification in medicine with a current annual practising certificate and vocational registration as a specialist medical practitioner in public health medicine
