**About the role**:
Waikato Regional Council aims to work together with communities, industry and other groups to build a Waikato region that has a healthy environment, a strong economy and vibrant communities. Our activities help look after our regions water, soil, air, geothermal areas and coasts so that we can all enjoy these resources for generations to come. Within the council, the Science, Policy and Information Directorate is responsible for investigating, reporting and managing our environment within the Waikato region.
**This position involves**:
- Assisting with the monitoring of stream invertebrates as part of the SoE programme of around 150 sites across the region during summer
- Associated undertaking of ecological habitat surveys at the same sites
- Long days in field with some away overnight trips
- Calling landowners and organising site access
- Recording data electronically using an iPad
- Cleaning and maintaining sampling gear
- Freshwater fisheries team help when required
- Driving long distances using manual transmission vehicles
- Data entry, loading data to databases, and quality assurance of data
- Large river survey monitoring
- Assisting environmental monitoring and science staff with other ecosystem health projects as they arise and associated field or office work
- Carrying heavy equipment - reasonable level of fitness
- Maintaining a high level of commitment to Health and Safety
- Being a team player, with great communication
