**Mō te tūranga | About the roles**

You will provide scientific expertise and advice on issues relating to freshwater, primarily in relation to either **river water quality **or **freshwater ecology **across the Waikato. **Please indicate your preference on your cover letter.**

In these roles you will:

- Provide technical advice to both internal and external customers, by developing, undertaking, and utilising research investigations, monitoring, and writing reports.
- Provide strategic advice to the Waikato Regional Plan and policy review to enhance environmental outcomes for the region.
- Identify scientific information needs and develop strategies and solutions to obtain information relevant to Council’s needs.
- When required, attend, and provide expert evidence in relation to RMA resource consent and plan hearings, and enforcement proceedings.
- Scope and manage both internally resourced projects and external contracts.

- A passion for positive environmental outcomes and advancing freshwater science.
- S ound knowledge of freshwater ecology and/or river water quality.
- Understanding of freshwater ecosystem or water chemistry processes in rivers.
- Ability to produce peer reviewed technical information.
- Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.

**Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience
- A postgraduate degree in freshwater biology/ecology, river science, water chemistry, or related fields
- 3-5 years in a relevant science role
- Experience analysing and interpreting complex information, for a range of different audiences and functions (including non-specialist audiences)
- Familiar with relevant statutory frameworks (including the Resource Management Act (1991) and National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (2020)).

The Water Quality and Ecology Team provides expertise in aspects of freshwater ecosystem health, covering the ecology and water quality of lakes, rivers, and streams across the Waikato Region. In addition, you will work alongside other scientists in the Environmental Science section from disciplines covering Air, Land, Soil, Groundwater, Hydrology, Wetlands, Biodiversity, Geothermal, and Mātauranga Māori.
