The New Zealand Government plays a crucial role in safeguarding New Zealand waterways. As a Maritime Regulatory Specialist, you will work closely with the General Regulatory Operations (GRO) teams to ensure compliance with safety, environmental and health and safety regulations.

The GRO teams support, encourage and require compliance through various activities, including investigating or auditing commercial vessels, patrolling with the Harbour Master, and conducting investigations into maritime accidents and incidents.

You will apply quality assurance practices consistently and identify improvements to ensure a culture of process improvement. You'll also work closely with the Notifications and Enquiries team to support the end-to-end processing of enquiries and notifications referred to GRO for response.

This field staff role involves working outdoors and around water, providing a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on maritime safety and security.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Conduct audits and inspections of commercial vessels to ensure compliance with regulations
  2. Investigate maritime accidents and incidents to identify root causes and recommend improvements
  3. Work closely with the GRO teams to develop and deliver education and guidance to prevent harm in the maritime community
  4. Support the development of policies and procedures to enhance maritime safety and security
