Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand Health New Zealand | Southern Full time

Role Overview

Dunedin Hospital seeks a skilled and enthusiastic Critical Care Specialist to join our team. As an Intensive Care Unit Registrar, you will provide high-quality care to patients with complex medical conditions, working closely with our consultant and senior nursing staff.

  • Main Responsibilities:
  • Providing critical care to patients with diverse medical conditions
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop patient care plans
  • Participating in education and training programs for registrars and junior staff

About the Unit

Southern Critical Care is a mixed medical and surgical intensive care unit, providing exposure to trauma, neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, and some pediatric intensive care. We are a tertiary referral center for the lower South Island, serving a population of 400,000 people.

We have a busy aeromedical retrieval team involved in inter-hospital and pre-hospital transport, predominantly by helicopter. Our unit has recently been refurbished, and we are scheduled to open a state-of-the-art 22-bed space unit this year.

Education and Training

We offer a comprehensive five-day orientation program, covering critical care and aeromedical retrieval. Registrars attend weekly seminar-based education and fortnightly simulation sessions. We also provide teaching targeted at primary and fellowship exams for CICM and ACEM critical care.

In-house echocardiography and ultrasound teaching are available, as well as courses locally including BASIC, RACEplus, and advanced critical care echocardiography courses. Dunedin Hospital has a strong collaborative relationship with the University of Otago, making research opportunities possible for those keen to pursue their academic careers.

About You

We are looking for enthusiastic registrars, both with previous intensive care experience and without. A minimum of three years' post-qualification experience is required. We are interested in hearing from more experienced critical care registrars with six months or more of anaesthetics or intensive care experience.
