Senior Legal Director, NZ Ministry of Justice

We are seeking a Senior Legal Director to join our team at the NZ Ministry of Justice.
About the RoleThe Chief Legal Counsel is a senior executive role responsible for providing high-quality legal advice and services to the Ministry and Ministers. This includes ensuring that all significant legal advice prepared by the legal team on public law and commercial law matters meets the required standards.
Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic legal advice to the Attorney-General on legislation proposed by other government departments to ensure consistency with fundamental rights and freedoms in the NZ Bill of Rights Act.
- Manage the administration of judicial and statutory appointments for Ministers, focusing on delivering timely, responsive, and effective legal services.
- Lead the Office of Legal Counsel, comprising the Public Defence Service, Legal Advice Team, Appointments and Specialist Functions Team, and administrative support staff.
To be successful in this role, you will have a Law degree and at least 10 years of practice in a legal field. You will also have experience in operational management in a medium or large organisation, demonstrating success in a senior management role.
You will have excellent communication skills, able to convey complex information to a wide range of audiences. Your leadership skills will enable you to work effectively as part of an executive group, with varying goals but shared organisational objectives.
