The Robert Burns Fellowship was established to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of Robert Burns. Its purpose is to encourage imaginative New Zealand literature and associate writers with the University of Otago.

Attached to the Department of English, the Fellowship duration spans from February to January. The stipend is equivalent to a Lecturer's salary, including contributions to travel/removal expenses, payable in twelve monthly instalments.
