Forensic Mental Health Specialist

About the Role
This is a unique opportunity to join our multidisciplinary team at Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, where you will be responsible for delivering specialized mental health services to young individuals within the Southern region.
The ideal candidate will have clinical expertise combined with a deep understanding of the legal and ethical landscape, ensuring the highest standards of care. You will oversee comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including risk assessments for self-harm, harm to others, and vulnerability.
You should have experience working with child services and neurodevelopment pathways, as well as an interest in community care for adolescents with mental health disorders. This role involves developing and implementing individualized treatment plans, preparing forensic reports, and providing expert testimony in court.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans incorporating pharmacological interventions, psychotherapy, and behavioural strategies.
- Prepare forensic reports and provide expert testimony in court, clearly communicating complex psychiatric concepts to legal professionals.
- Ability to build strong relationships with young patients, taking into account their developmental stage, cultural background, and individual experiences.
- Participate in professional development activities such as CPD groups, journal clubs, and grand rounds.
- Opportunities to teach medical students and registrars, as well as being appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine.
